Growing up in Puerto Rico, the holidays were a vibrant tapestry of flavors, scents, and sounds. The kitchen would come alive with the aroma of traditional dishes, each recipe a cherished family secret. But my culinary journey has taken a new direction. As a Messianic Jew, I now have a deep appreciation for the rich flavors of Mediterranean cuisine, which connect me with the ancient traditions of Yeshua and his time. This blog post is a celebration of my Puerto Rican heritage and my newfound love for Israeli dishes. Join me at the table, where cultures blend and flavors unite.
The Heart of Puerto Rican Cuisine
Puerto Rican meals are a feast for the senses. Entering a holiday kitchen, you are embraced by the warm, comforting scents of arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas), pernil (roast pork), and mofongo (mashed plantains). Each dish holds a story, sharing the essence of family gatherings where everyone plays a part.

The music complements the food. Salsa and merengue create an energetic atmosphere, urging everyone to dance and sing along. Whether it’s a romantic ballad by Ricky Martin or an salsa tune by Gilbertito Santa Rosa, the melodies enhance each bite, making the meal memorable.
A Shift in Culinary Focus
My journey as a Messianic Jew has transformed my culinary interests. I found myself captivated by Mediterranean flavors, reflecting the meals Yeshua might have enjoyed. The vibrant spices, fresh ingredients, and the tradition of sharing meals deeply resonate with me.
My exploration of Mediterranean cooking began in 2019 during a challenging year. After reading the Bible, I felt inspired to recreate the meals that Yeshua shared with his followers. I prepared lamb, enjoyed warm pita bread with cheese and fruits, and indulged in the sweet-tart arils of pomegranates. Each meal connected me to my faith and history.

As I became more involved in synagogue life, I discovered the rich variety of Jewish cuisine. Dishes like Cholent, a hearty stew; Shakshuka, poached eggs in spicy tomato sauce; and Matza Ball Soup, a comforting classic, became staples in my kitchen. Each dish serves as a reminder of the biblical traditions that unite us.
The Wonders of Kosher
An eye-opening aspect of my culinary journey has been understanding kosher eating. Kosher laws guide us in our dietary choices, rooted in biblical commandments rather than mere traditions.
While the concept of kosher may seem outdated to some, Scripture provides clarity. In Acts 10:15, Peter hears, "What God has made clean, do not call common." Likewise, Mark 7:19 states that through Yeshua, all foods are clean.
These passages remind us that our relationship with food is sacred. Eating becomes a spiritual experience, where gratitude and mindfulness transform a meal into something profound.
